Let’s tackle the red elephant in the room. Heart disease. Heart disease takes away 610,000 people in America each year! 140,000 of that number is Blacks. Nearly 48% of Black women and 44% of Black men have some form of it. While you’re letting that sink in, almost half of Americans are at risk! Why aren’t more people talking about this?

Fighting against this disease goes against the very fabric of American culture… fast food, big screen TV’s, getting drunk with pals, smoking, playing video games & hours on social media. The causes of this disease are wrapped up in our American culture:

1.)

High cholesterol, poor diet & obesity. Eating bad foods and not enough vegetables and fruits are the culprit.

2.)

Lack of physical activity. Hours in front of the TV screen, computer or phone means less time outside being active or exercising.

3.)

Too much smoking and drinking. We are an escapism and pleasure seeking culture, it ultimately catches up.

4.)

High blood pressure. Stress and anxiety come from our “get rich or die trying” mentalities. Many of us are trying to find ways to be famous, rich or both and we're stressed out.

5.)

Diabetes. All of the above causes diabetes.

Age or family history can also have something to do with heart disease, but the overwhelming majority of it is totally controllable and that's good! Deaths from heart disease are higher in blacks than in whites and other ethnic groups and heart disease develops at a younger age in blacks, so blacks need to be even more cautious.
